Mock Exam Summary

Lukas family was worried because the fog was very huge and he disappeared on his own. They were afraid that elephants may step him to death. Everybody searched and called out for Lukas until dark. Lukas’ brothers stood bewildered, in the quiet house. However, they could not find any traces of Lukas. When the fog started clearing, four of them started searching for Lukas. Two others made a big fire, hoping that Lukas will see the glow and come back. At daybreak, Koos went to tell the forester about Lukas. By midday, fourteen woodcutters were taking part in the search. During evening, the constable said that Lukas might be dead. The numbers of men searching were increasing everyday, as the news spread through the forest. On the eighth day, Martiens took upon himself, saying that Lukas was dead. Elias refused to admit it. Months later, a child’s skeleton parts had been found along the river.

The Truth - Draft 6

Several years past. When he found out the truth, Vinsanda, was still not able to forget those unbearable happenings and regretting not joining the Tigers. Whenever he tried not to think about it, images of those scenes would keep flashing through his mind. No matter what, he just could not release his hatred towards the Sinhalese.

Back in the year 1930s, Vinsanda, was an adorable 5 year old Tamil boy. His ancestors were brought in to Sri Lanka by the British several years ago. When both Jaffna and India gained their independence, everybody was living in peace till 1948. The Sinhalese government announced the Ceylon Citizenship Act and everything seemed to be changing gradually. This left Vinsanda, his family and many other Tamils to be found stateless. Many others were not able to have a proper job too. This Citizenship Act made many Tamils unhappy and it was where all the conflicts started.

Following by in 1950, the Resettlement Policy was made by the Sri Lanka Government. This caused much unhappiness among the Tamils living in Jaffna. Many poor Sinhalese peasants were also ordered to be settled in Jaffna too, and these provoked the Tamils as the Sinhalese were living in the Tamils’ territories. Therefore, many Tamils including Vinsanda’s dad, Gayesh, were opposing. However, the plan of resettlement still continued.

Vinsanda and his family members were all upset with the Sinhalese. To get back what they deserved, Gayesh wanted Vinsanda to study well and get into the university in Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka.

“OK! I promise you, dad, I’ll work hard!” promised Vinsanda excitedly, hooking his finger with his dad's.

However, things turned from bad to worst. In 1956, the Government announced that the Official Language was changed from English to Sinhala. Vinsanda was very worried if he was able to manage this new official language, when he was only given 3 short years to learn, before taking his ‘O’ levels. Moreover, his parents still continued to encourage him.

Few weeks later, something turned out unexpectedly. Vinsanda and his mum, Sivakami were totally shocked and devastated. His dad, Gayesh, was taken away by some Sinhalese soldiers. Sivakami knew that her husband would never return, however she kept truth from Vinsanda.

In order to hide the fact, Sivakami replied softly while bearing her tears, “Your dad wants you to study hard, so concentrate on your studies. I’m sure your dad will be back...”

Later on in 1972, the New University Admission criteria were brought out by the Sri Lanka government. This was for the privilege of the Sinhalese, in order for them to have an easier entry into the University. However, this also sparked off much unhappiness from the Tamils, in which the government was very unfair to them. Fortunately with his good results, Vinsanda was one of the few Tamils that were able to enter the University.

Nonetheless, all these acts and policies caused the Tamils to be very angry and upset, leaving them to use violence towards the Sinhalese. In 1976, there was the Formation of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), also known as the Tamil Tigers. This terrorists group were not only recruiting men, women and children were recruited too. However not only Tamils, the Sinhalese also used violence towards them too.

Vinsanda knew that by formatting the Tamil Tigers was a bad idea, but what he was worrying was about his dad, Gayesh. It had almost been 20 years since his dad was gone. He felt the urge to ask his mum what happened.

“Mum, where’s dad? It has been 20 years,” questioned Vinsanda curiously, looking into his mother’s eyes.

“The Sinhalese soldiers killed him,” Sivakami wept in tears, and continued, “His body had already been buried in a mass grave.”

Vinsanda was too shocked to say anything. Tears just gushed out from his eyes, praying for his dad to return. “Why? Why didn’t I join the Tamil Tigers?” he kept thinking.

However, the Tamil Tigers still continue attacking Sri Lanka, not admitting defeat. On the other hand, due to the wipe-out of the Tamil Tigers recently, the conflicts and riots between Tamil Tigers and Sinhalese then came to an end. However, the deaths that were lost in these riots will never be back and Gayesh’s life will be gone forever, innocently.

Singapore Flyer Reflection - Draft 2

Singapore Flyer is the world's largest observation wheel. Standing at a stunning 165m from the ground, the flyer offers a breathtaking, panoramic view of our island city and beyond. It is also one of the main tourists’ attractions in Singapore, each capsule can take 28 people and each revolution takes approximately 30 minutes. I was filled with both excitement and anxiety at it was my first time boarding it. However, I hoped that the flyer will not stop in the middle of the journey, as it happened before last year. As for my expectations, I wished that I could see some of the famous landmarks of Singapore.

Standing on the ground floor, I looked up to catch a view of the structure of the Singapore flyer and it was really magnificently huge. The surroundings at the entrance were very beautiful too. The hazy vision of the scenery was both stunning and spectacular. From a bird’s eye view, I saw some of the famous landscapes, like the Floating Stadium, Esplanade and the Marina Barrage and I stared at them in wonderment. As for the colourful Floating Stadium, which is located next to the Esplanade, consists of a 27,000-person seating gallery and the world’s largest floating platform performance stage on water.

Before I stepped into the capsule, I felt that there were butterflies in my stomach and anticipated fear. However to my surprise, I could not feel the flyer moving at all. During the ride, the capsule was filled with the cacophony of students’ chatter. Some of them were very mischievous and ran around inside the capsule. After the ride ended, I felt joyous because the ride was an exhilarating one. Nonetheless, my expectations were met. I managed to see most of the landscapes and I feel that the flyer is really a superb engineering feat that was built.

One of my friends had agoraphobia and claustrophobia and she was very scared when we were in the capsule. She dare not stand up and just kept sitting on the bench. However, the others were busy taking group photos with the teacher and pictures of the landscapes. We were also chatting and laughing during the ride. Some of the others were busy doing their task sheet, wanting to complete them as soon as possible.

Overall, I enjoyed the trip to the Singapore flyer very much and also learnt many things about the famous landmarks. I believe that the majority of the students liked the flight. On hindsight, the trip was worth-going and a memorable one, and therefore I would definitely this recommend to others. I also hope that the tourism in Singapore would increase with the help of the famous Singapore Flyer.
